LEUWCD Board Member wins PPA for Southwest states

Weldon Shook, Llano Estacado UWCD Board Member, earned the 2009 Southwest Peanut Profitability Award. Shook’s peanut and cotton rotation and his better than 5,000 pounds per acre average peanut yield last year, helped him win this prestigious award.

The Education Cooperative would like to congratulate Shook on his success. We are proud to have him serving as a member of the board of one of our Underground Water Conservation District's.

Gaines County Library

What a great group of kids we had today! We were at the Gaines County Library for the Llano Estacado Underground Water Conservation District! A presentation was given at 10:00 a.m. to the younger age group and another talk was given at 2:00 p.m. to an older group. The students were given a presentation about rain sticks, similar to the one presented to the students in Yoakum County last week. Both age groups were so much fun to work with and we look forward to visiting the Gaines County Library again soon!

Special Thanks to Melissa for helping me! I enjoyed having an extra set of hands!

Sandy Land UWCD Library Presentations

A presentation was given at the two libraries located within the Sandy Land Underground Water Conservation District. Our first visit was to the Cecil Bickley Library, in Denver City. The other presentation was given at the Yoakum County Library in Plains.

The presentations began with the Education Coordinator giving the students a brief explanation of what rain sticks are constructed of and how they are assembled. Then the students listened to a tall tale of how the rain stick came into existence. The students enjoyed looking at pictures of various cultures around the world using rain sticks during their religious ceremonies.

We then read the Rain Stick a fable by Sandra Robinson. A young boy's quest for the rain takes him on a journey from the hot, dry savanna to the moist, comforting rain forest. We traveled with him and solved the riddle; A slender staff touches earth and sky at the same time. We encounter languid lions, a crafty crocodile, and a brilliant bird on our way to discover the place of the rain.

We ended the presentation by making our own rain sticks out of toilet paper holders. Then we sang a song to remind ourselves the importance of saving water.

Change The Way You Think

I am amazed at the amount of water it takes to create a single product in today’s society. The following are a few products used or consumed almost every day in America. The last, is a short video I found on You Tube, on the amount of water it takes to make one latte. When writing this blog, I felt a little biased against all you coffee drinkers out there, since I am a diet coke fanatic.

So, I will even up the score....
It takes 10 gallons of water to make 1 can of diet coke.

The Education Cooperative sponsored a website workshop at the South Plains UWCD on Tuesday. The wonderfully talented Jackie Lackey (what a great name!!) ,owner and manager of Encore Visions, conducted a six hour presentation/demonstration.

She lectured on the basics of Dreamweaver and Photoshop. We learned so much in the short time that she was here, and are looking forward to launching our newly designed sites soon.
